Fire

The South Walton Fire District (SWFD) was notified of a structure fire at 6:10 a.m. and arrived 4 minutes later to find smoke bellowing from Tamtech Pool & Spa, a local business located on N. Holiday Rd. After quickly gaining access into the building, the crews located and extinguished the fire at 6:37a.m., 17 minutes after arriving on scene. The business was closed and no injuries were reported.

The early detection and notification of the SWFD of the fire by neighbors, coupled with the prompt response and extinguishment by the Fire District kept damages at a minimum. The State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to investigate the cause of the fire and has determined that it was electrical in nature.

FWC Reports

It’s hunting season and that means special details for the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and K-9 units. In Okaloosa County FWC Officer Danny Arnette organized a detail, Operation Tree Rat, on the Yellow River for opening day of small game season.  The detail produced one arrest for hunting over bait in the management area during archery season.  K-9 Officer Sarah Hahner and K-9 Sadie  tracked the subject to the bait.  Also, one warning was issued for taking squirrel in the closed area on Eglin Air Force Base and one warning for possession of a gun in the closed area on Eglin.

FWC Officer Van Barrow checked a subject on the Yellow River Wildlife Management Area after observing him quickly exit a wooded area when the hunter observed the officer’s presence.  The subject continued to act suspicious and nervous as Officer Barrow checked his license.  The next day, K-9 Officer Sarah Hahner and K-9 Sadie were requested to assist with searching the wooded area where the subject was last observed.  Officer Hahner and K-9 Sadie located a baited area and tree stand.  The subject was later contacted by Officer Barrow and admitted to hunting from the stand and placing the bait on the management area.  He will be charged for attempting to take deer over a baited area in a management area.

In Walton County, Lt. Dennis Welsh and Officer Ken White worked the lower end of the Choctawhatchee River Wildlife Management Area.  The officers checked 68 users and 30 vessels on opening weekend of small game season.  Two boating citations and four warnings were issued.

Also in Walton County, FWC Officer Espy Letcher checked three subjects on the Choctawhatchee River Wildlife Management Area who were in possession of a live wild hog.  The subjects were transporting the hog from the management area to their residence.  One of the subjects was cited for the violation.

Adkinson will be sworn in as Walton County Sheriff during the first week of January 2009. He says the transition process will give them a much needed advanced evaluation of the current operations, provide for communication with staff, and identify immediate needs that will define their strategic priorities.

Handguns and rifles are flying off the shelves at Ted Sabate's gun shop in Kensington, Md. And while it's not uncommon for gun sales to spike when the economy takes a downturn, Sabate says that's not what he's hearing from customers. According to Sabate, gun enthusiasts are stockpiling because they say they're afraid the incoming Democratic administration will impose new gun bans. "People are afraid that if there's another ban imposed ... they won't be able to buy them at all," Sabate said. "So they want to get something now before they don't think that they can." Sabate's shop is not alone. In gun shops across the country, federal background checks are up 9 percent nationally over the last year, suggesting gun sales are increasing as Inauguration Day nears.

Though President-elect Barack Obama said repeatedly during the campaign that he supports Second Amendment rights, some gun buyers still are not convinced. Vice president-elect Joe Biden, for instance, was a strong supporter of the assault-weapons ban, signed into law by President Clinton in 1994. Under the ban, domestic gun manufacturers were required to stop making semi-automatic assault weapons and ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds (except for military or police use). The ban expired four years ago.
