Judge Rules Spikes Can
Be Charged
The website, Flagler News
Journal Online, reports attorneys for former Florala officer Todd Spikes argued
for dismissing charges against their client because he had been chatting with
someone over the age of 18, not an actual minor. Spikes, who lives in DeFuniak
Springs, is charged with attempted lewd or lascivious battery, lewd or
lascivious exhibition and computer pornography and child exploitation.
The Flagler News Journal says
the judge ruled Spike's intent to have sex expressed in his online chats for
several days with a decoy who was posing as a 13-year-old girl combined with
arranging a meeting with her, and then driving to Flagler Beach, was sufficient
to charge him.
Spikes was one of 21 men who
police said had sexually explicit online chats with decoys posing as children
and then drove to a house in Flagler Beach to meet what they believed to be
children during the sting in December 2006.
Spike's attorney has argued the
charge of attempted lewd or lascivious battery should be dropped because Spikes
abandoned his alleged attempt. According to police, Spikes drove to the decoy
house but then drove away without getting out of his sport utility vehicle.
Spikes was pulled over a few blocks away by Flagler Beach police and arrested.
Police said they found handguns, an assault rifle and a shotgun, all loaded in
his SUV. Investigators said they also found pornographic DVDs, condoms, an
anchor and a rope, a floating fishing light, handcuffs, a bulletproof vest, two
police scanners and video cameras and digital cameras.
The case continues.

supplies of Boys & Girls Club athletic programs.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald
Coast says the funds allow them to continue offering high quality and fun

athletics are a part of daily life at the Clubs and the funds donated by Nike
help them expand their already great program. She says all Club kids will
participate each day but rather than force them to show up, they want to teach
them a love of athletics and help them to have a healthy lifestyle as they grow
up.

Walton Bus Driver Says
She Lost Job After Reporting Safety Concerns
Smoking at fuel pumps, students
getting off the bus and skipping school, students getting off the bus at stops
they are not approved for. These are some of the safety concerns brought by a
bus driver who’s contract was not renewed after she complained to the
Transportation Coordinator and Superintendent.
Barbara R. Hunt was a bus
driver for the Walton School
District. She has not been re-hired and says it is
because she pointed out what she claims are safety issues to her supervisor,
Mack Work. At the recent Walton School Board meeting, she told the board she
believes there is something wrong with the system, and when there is a problem
you should go to the person and let them know, taking additional steps if
needed. She said employees should not be punished for trying to do what is
right. She told the board she feels she was not re-hired due to retaliation by
Work, not due to a contract.
Some of the complaints include
employees smoking at the fuel pumps while she was present. Hunt told the board,
when she addressed the issue, the employees, including Work, responded with
profanities. She also said Superintendent Carlene Anderson told her to keep her
mouth shut. She referenced seeing students she had dropped off at school later
at the local service station, smoking. Hunt said she was told not to call the
parents about their students not being at school. Another student wanted to get
off at an unapproved stop and when she would not let them she asked for help,
but coach Marello did not respond in the way she feels he should have. She said
she has concerns about safety and asked why she was not re-hired when the county
seems to always need drivers.
Hunt asked for her job back and
for assurances the safety issues are addressed. She also said there are a lot of
employees intimidated by Work, Miller and Superintendent Anderson.
Board member Sharon Roberts
said she spoke to Anderson about smoking around the gas pumps and
that Anderson
would speak to Work to have it corrected. Roberts also read the job description,
which included enforcing rules such as smoking. She told the board, if this is
retaliatory action against Hunt for her actions, then she had a problem with
it.
Chairman Barnhill said there is
to be no vote on the issue because there has to be a recommendation from the
Superintendent. Roberts asked about hearing the matter because it is listed as
an employee grievance on the agenda. District attorney Ben Holley said the
grievance was not filed in the correct amount of time, 10 days after the
superintendent’s decision. He also said, since Hunt’s contract was not renewed,
she is no longer an employee so it is not an employee grievance. He also
indicated the hiring comes from the Superintendent, not the Board.
Hunt
again asked for her job back. She says Work, Marello, Miller and Anderson should all be
held accountable for what she says is non-compliance. No action was taken. The
matter of whether to hire her or not resides with the Superintendent.

A Newark man frustrated with the volume of late payment
notices and collection calls he received from a Bloomfield Rent-A-Center store,
walked into the business today and set himself ablaze in front of several
employees and customers. "He basically pulled out a bottle of lighter fluid,
poured it all over his body, pulled out a cigarette lighter and lit himself on
fire," Bloomfield Police Capt. Chris Goul said. Employees rushed to get
water to extinguish the blaze and the 62-year-old man, Emilio Saladriagas, was
rushed to the burn unit at Saint Barnabas Medical Center for treatment.
Saladrigas was listed in critical condition tonight, said hospital spokesman
Sally Malech. The incident happened around 1 p.m. when emergency officials were
notified there was a fire at the Bloomfield Avenue store, which allows customers
to rent furniture, electronics and other goods with the option of buying the
goods. Saladrigas arrived at the store and asked to speak with a manager about a
series of form letters he'd received about late payments on his furniture
rentals, Goul said. When he was told a manager wasn't available he became upset
and pulled out the lighter fluid. "At this we don't know if he had mental health
issues or what sparked it," he said. "Employees said he'd always been a nice
man." Bloomfield authorities and the Essex County Arson Squad reviewed the
store's surveillance tape and because Saladrigas didn't make "overt or criminal"
actions to harm anyone but himself, he hasn't been charged with a crime, Goul
said. The store remained open this
evening. Crisis teams were sent to the store to counsel employees, said
Rent-A-Center spokesman Dwight Dumler. The company, based in Plano, Texas, has
about 3,500 stores nationwide and roughly 50 in New Jersey, according to its
website. Nothing like this had happened before and the company is "...concerned
about the gentleman," said Dumler, who described himself in a state of
disbelief.
